What are you listening to?

Aug 24

This isn’t a spiritual question. I’m not challenging you on the “voices” in your life. I just really like good music, and want to know what you’ve been listening to lately.

I listen to music way more than I watch TV. Pandora is the most used app on my phone. I’ve got three stations that I rotate through:

  1. Mumford and Sons – Lots of great music, and a pretty wide variety.
  2. The Beatles – Because, while it’s fun to find new music, the classics are classic for a reason.
  3. Explosions In The Sky – This is my study/reading music. All instrumental, so I don’t get distracted singing along, or trying to figure out the lyrics.

So, for your listening pleasure, here are three songs so good I could use them as a ringtone, but won’t.

“Little Talks” – Of Monsters and Men

“Some Nights” – Fun.

“It’s Time” – Imagine Dragons

Alright, now it’s your turn. What have you been listening to lately? Any new bands or songs you think everyone needs to know about?

  1. I’ve been listening to Matthew Perryman Jones’s new record (free on NoiseTrade right now) and it’s amazing. And I can’t wait for the new Mumford & Sons. Oh, and Carly Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe.” Really speaks to me.

  2. Love all of these. Recently I’ve been listening to Gregory Alan Isakov, Cold Specks, The Lumineers, and Citizens.

  3. The best albums of the Summer for me have been from House of Heroes, The Classic Crime and We Shot The Moon

  4. Sam Adams /

Gregory Alan Isakov is magical. As is Bon Iver. They’re not Lisa Loeb, but then again, who is? For instrumental music, Balmorhea is really awesome (especially their “All is Wild, All is Silent” and “River Arms” albums). They were my default study/reading music this past school year. And they’re from Austin.

  5. Whoa… Sam, My friend, Andrew Hernandez has been the sound guy for Balmorhea on their last few US and Europe tours!?! Small world.

I’ve been listening to a newish band Bellarive, and a lot of the worship album “Austin Stone Live”

  6. So I’m 3 days late, but I’ve been thinking about this post. In the art studio I have an old school 3 cd changer that I load up when I start to work. Making art requires atmosphere (for me, at least) so I have a huge variety of music. What am I listening to? A crazy mish mash of tunes that I could never list all of. This happens due to my addiction to digging through stacks of discarded cds at Goodwill, thrift stores and garage sales. Then there are the artists I love so much that I buy ALL their work, like Jonny Lang. Now you young whipper-snappers need to understand I’m old as dirt (almost 60) so I’m like…your grandma…but I’ve been rockin’ since the 60′s, so some things on my list make sense and some things will make you go…what? That’s weird for her to like…but I do, so there. Here’s the latest list of artists I play lately in my art studio…
    Beethoven & other classical
    Beatles FOREVER!
    Bare Naked Ladies strangely intriguing
Billy Joel can’t keep from singing along
    Adele angst & cool
Jonny Lang OMG LOVE THIS GUY TO DEATH!
Ladysmith Black Mombazo(sp?) River of Dreams (Billy Joel’s song) and other African Gospel tunes
Christine Aguilera I’ll admit…resisted listening, but now have two cds via garage sale and LIKE, especially the song “Fighter” that I rev up to.
Dave Mathews Band You and Me Together major hook song, but I like his poetic lyrics and rhythms
Janis Joplin My bluesy rocker from MY generation
Lenny Kravitz Am I listening to Jimi? Sometimes it feels that way.
Linda Ronstadt w/Ann Savoy L.R. fan from years back, but this Cajun/Creole style cd is completely different. Really hauntingly beautiful.
Jesse Cook Lots of guitar instrumentals with flavors of flamenco, classical, ethnic, Morrocan, belly-dancing (not ME, though) type melodies that are amazing.
Rich Mullins All I have are the Jesus Demos 2cd set and it still moves me to tears.
Paul Simon Like Billy Joel, good to mindlessly sing along with.
Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir Makes me dance, makes me cry, makes me worship
Some kind of Zen Meditation from Walmart that makes me think I’m getting a massage or something with bubbling, trickling water sounds, windchimes, and flutes.

There are so many more that I’ll just stop. I hope if some of your readers haven’t tried some of these, they will give them a listen because I listen to your stuff and you know when it’s good, it’s good…and ageless…just like ME! ;)
